Baron is home!

Baron came home today! He's in a lot of pain and on a lot of pain meds. He can't walk yet, so we made him a comfy basket to sleep in. He and mom are going to spend the day on the couch writing.

The vet says he's doing really well, and that he was an amazing sport. She said that when we brought him in he was malnourished and dehydrated, but other than that (and being hit by a car!) he was generally healthy. She also said that he already seems to be adjusting to life with three legs very well. Eventually he should be able to walk and run just fine.

I want to thank Amy Wallace and Anna Tutt for bringing Baron a very handsome collar, nameplate, and bandana with the inscription "I'm a Survivor!" He can't wear them yet, but we hung them from his basket. And I know he's going to love them.

He is such a sweet puppy. Thank you to everyone who has already contributed to help save him. Unfortunately surgery is expensive, even for dogs. So any donation would be hugely appreciated. Without all of you Baron wouldn't be with us anymore.

Baron is coming home!

Baron is coming home today, we pick him up at 11:00!

More pictures coming soon!

Update on Baron!

I just called the Animal Hospital and Baron is having surgery right now! The receptionist said they would call me as soon as he is out and they know how he's doing.

.....

I would like to thank everyone who has already donated their time, money, and facebook statuses to help Baron, I have started a list to the right of the page to help recognize these wonderful people. If I somehow skipped your name please send me a message so I can correct it!

I would also like to send out a huge thank you to the Humane Society of the Ozarks. I called them this morning to let them know about Baron and they have given him a $50 health voucher to help cover the cost of his surgery! This is a wonderful organization and you can learn more about them at  http://www.hsozarks.com.

I would also like to thank Wedington Animal Hospital, and Dr. Nancy Belknap in particular, for taking good care of Baron. It was a miracle that they could get him in to see a doctor within an hour of my phone call and without an appointment. I'm glad to know that he is in good hands.

.....

I will update again as soon as I hear any news about Baron. Again, thanks to everyone who is helping to save this little dog. Every dollar really does make a big difference.

Help Baron: A Puppy Needs You!

Vet visit and X-rays: $135
Amputation Surgery: $600
Neutering Fee: $80
Shots, De-worming, De-fleaing: ?

Saving a life: Not feeling so priceless.

So, I started this group to help Baron. He's a homeless puppy, he was very hurt, and he needs you.

I have set up a PayPal account for donations to help pay for Baron's health bills. Even a dollar makes a difference. If you could pass up that one coke, or a quarter of your daily Starbucks coffee, it would make a big difference to this little dog.

......

So, today I found a puppy. He had wandered into my backyard and he was a mess- covered in mud, fleas, and obviously badly hurt (one leg was dangling uselessly). I gave him a bath and realized that his leg was seriously injured, and he probably needed to go to the vet. I called and they said I could bring him right in.

The vet knew just by looking at him that his leg was broken, and the X-rays confirmed this. She told me that it looked like he had probably been hit by a car, it had been broken for at least 10 days, and the healing process was at a stage that surgery would be extremely expensive and quite possibly ineffective because he had already lost a lot of bone mass. She gave me two reasonable options:

1) Amputation
2) Euthanization

Long story short I couldn't let them kill an otherwise perfectly healthy, happy, and sweet puppy, so I am soon to be the guardian of a three-legged puppy. ( I also decided to call him Baron, he didn't have any identification, and he was so pitiful I thought he needed a noble name)
